Regional Leadership on Death Penalty Reform

JPP at ADPAN REGIONAL CONFERENCE 2025

In June 2025, Justice Project Pakistan participated in the Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network (ADPAN) Regional Conference, “Reimagining a Death Penalty-Free Asia-Pacific”, held in Manila, Philippines. The conference brought together regional civil society actors and international experts to explore collective strategies for abolition in a shifting civic and political landscape.

Over two days of panel discussions and strategy workshops, JPP contributed insights on Pakistan’s evolving approach to capital punishment, including recent efforts to reduce the scope of the death penalty and strengthen alignment with international human rights standards.

JPP also joined a panel hosted by Harm Reduction International, focused on the use of the death penalty for drug offences, where it shared reflections on Pakistan’s reform trajectory since the 2023 abolition of capital punishment for drug crimes.

As a member of the South Asia and Middle East (SAME) Network, JPP’s participation underscored the value of regionally rooted expertise within broader abolitionist conversations. The ADPAN conference offered a meaningful opportunity for dialogue, collaboration, and reflection—reinforcing JPP’s position within a growing movement advancing a rights-based, abolitionist future in Asia and beyond.
